The season-by-season gear checklist

The core list — every season

• Valid license, qualifying license, and habitat stamp (physical or digital proof) — see license costs
• Hunter education card, if required for your birth year
• Topographic maps of your unit (paper backup, not just a phone app) and a compass
• A pack sized for the hunt — day pack for scouting, frame pack rated to carry meat if you're hunting alone
• Game bags for quartering and packing out meat
• A sharp knife and a way to resharpen it in the field
• Headlamp with spare batteries — most elk hunting starts and ends in the dark
• First-aid kit, and a satellite communicator or personal locator beacon if you'll be out of cell range
• Enough water capacity or a filter for your terrain, plus high-calorie food for long days

Early season — archery, September

Archery season runs during warm days and cool nights, often with afternoon thunderstorms, and demands close-range stealth during the rut. The gear list leans toward lightweight, quiet, and scent-aware:

• Lightweight, quiet layers — noise discipline matters more than warmth this time of year
• Rain shell for afternoon storms, common in September in the high country
• Scent-control clothing or field washes, and a plan for wind direction
• Cow/bull calls if you're calling elk — practiced before the season, not learned in the field
• Lighter sleep system if you're camping — nights are cool, not brutally cold, at most elevations
• Extra water capacity — September heat during midday movement dehydrates faster than hunters expect
• Bino harness and rangefinder set up for the shorter shot distances typical of bow hunting

Late season — fourth rifle, November

The fourth rifle season runs in late November, when elk are pushed lower by weather and cold is the dominant factor. The list shifts hard toward warmth and traction:

• Insulated, layered clothing system rated well below freezing — temperatures regularly drop into the teens or lower at elevation
• Insulated, waterproof boots, broken in well before the season
• Traction aids for ice and packed snow on trails and roads
• Hand and foot warmers, and a plan for keeping optics and rangefinders from fogging in the cold
• A four-season sleep system and shelter if camping — late-November nights are unforgiving
• Headlamp and spare batteries kept warm — cold drains batteries fast
• A vehicle kit for winter driving: traction devices, blankets, and emergency supplies for mountain roads that can close or ice over without warning

What doesn't change
