Elk in GMU 2

GMU 2 has no over-the-counter elk: all 9 of its 2026 elk codes are drawn, and its early either-sex rifle code E-E-002-E1-R drew out at 28 preference points for resident adults. CPW 2026 Big Game Brochure

Everything below is 2026: the 2026 hunt codes, the 2026 draw and the 2025 harvest. 2027 hunt codes and quotas are not on this site yet (CPW had not published them as of October 17, 2026, when this site last checked). Codes do change between years, so confirm yours in the 2027 brochure before you apply.

Where GMU 2 is

GMU 2 lies in Moffat County, along the Wyoming line. CPW's boundary description: bounded on N by WY; on E by Little Snake River; on S by Yampa River; on W by Green River, CRs 34 & 10, Colo. 318 and CR 10N (Irish Canyon Rd.). 2026 brochure, unit descriptions p. 69–72 Check the line on the ground and on private land in CPW's own Colorado Hunting Atlas; boundary roads and ridgelines are the legal edge, not a map shading. How GMUs work.

What is different about GMU 2

GMU 2 has no over-the-counter elk at all: it is on none of CPW's 2026 OTC maps. 2026 brochure, OTC maps pp. 38–40 Its bull and either-sex codes are long waits. In the 2026 draw, resident adults needed 25 preference points for the archery code E-E-002-O1-A, 27 preference points for the muzzleloader bull code E-M-002-O1-M and 28 preference points for the early rifle code; nonresident adults needed 33 preference points for the early rifle code. CPW 2026 Elk Draw Recap

Cow codes are the opposite. The rifle cow codes E-F-002-O1-R through E-F-002-O4-R drew out at 0 to 2 preference points for resident adults. GMU 2 shares its western boundary (Irish Canyon Road, Colo. 318) with GMU 201, and the late cow code E-F-002-L1-R is valid in both, so its draw numbers are for the pair.

2025 harvest, by hunt code

CPW reports harvest by hunt code and by herd area (DAU), not by GMU. A code that covers several units reports one number for all of them, so read those rows as the code, not as GMU 2. Why success rates mislead.

2025 elk harvest by hunt code (CPW 2025 Elk Harvest Estimates). Each row is the whole hunt code, wherever it was valid in 2025 (2025 brochure unit lists).

Common questions

Is there over-the-counter elk in GMU 2?

No. GMU 2 is not on any of CPW's 2026 over-the-counter elk maps, so every elk license here comes through the draw.

How many points does a GMU 2 bull tag take?

In the 2026 draw, the muzzleloader bull code E-M-002-O1-M drew out at 27 preference points for resident adults and 34 preference points for nonresident adults. Those are 2026 results; the 2027 cutoffs will differ.

Are GMU 2 cow tags hard to draw?

Not compared with its bull tags. The 2026 rifle cow codes drew out at 0 to 2 preference points for resident adults, and the fourth-season code E-F-002-O4-R had 19 resident adult first-choice applicants for 30 licenses.
