Who we are, and what this covers

The Colorado Hunting Guide (thecoloradohuntingguide.com) is an independent reference site about hunting in Colorado, operated from Colorado, United States ("we", "us", "our"). This policy covers the website and the server function behind its one form. It does not cover the third-party sites we link to (CPW, the state's license lookup, outfitters' own websites), which are governed by their own policies. The site is directed to a United States audience.

What we collect

One form, and you can read the whole site without touching it: the email address you enter in the alerts signup form, if you choose to submit it. We do not ask for your name, location, or anything else, and we don't collect any personal information if you simply read the site. Under the button is a notice that submitting means you agree to our terms and this policy, so with your address we record which version of the terms was in effect and when you submitted. The form also contains a hidden field that is invisible to human visitors and exists solely to catch spam bots; it collects nothing from real people.

One more thing rides along with the signup, and we would rather say it plainly than bury it: the signup records which page you subscribed from. When your browser submits the form it sends the address of the page the form was on (the standard Referer header), and we store that in your subscriber row in a field called source_page. It tells us which pages are earning signups. It is one page, recorded once, at the moment you subscribed; it is not a browsing history, and we keep no record of what else you read here.

How we use it

Your address is used only to send you our email: one email a month with deadlines, season changes and draw tips. Some of those emails include an occasional offer from a Colorado outfitter or gear maker. We send those ourselves; the outfitter or gear maker never receives your address. We do not add you to any other list, and we never sell, rent, or share your address with third parties. Every email carries a one-click unsubscribe link and our postal address, PO Box 203, Larkspur, CO 80118. If we ever want to use your address for something else, we will ask first.

How it's handled

When you submit the form, your address is stored in our own subscriber list, a private database hosted on Cloudflare, and sent to our email provider, Resend, which delivers the messages on our behalf. A notification also goes to our own inbox. We store your address, which site and form you signed up through, the page you signed up from (as above), the version of our terms you agreed to and when, and the dates you subscribed and unsubscribed. That is all of it. We don't build a profile, we don't track you across the web, and we don't store anything beyond what's needed to send these emails. Both Cloudflare and Resend act as service providers on our behalf; beyond them, we disclose personal information only if legally required to.

Until 25 July 2026 there was no database at all and this page said so; the "list" was simply our inbox. We changed it because we had promised you a reminder before the draw deadline and had no reliable way to keep that promise. Storing the address is what makes the promise keepable.

Two practical details worth stating plainly, because you may notice them:

• Who the email comes from. Our messages are sent from [email protected]. If that sending setup is ever unavailable, our system falls back to a verified address on myroofrisk.com, a domain the same operator uses for another site, because it was the domain first verified with our email provider. Either way the display name says The Colorado Hunting Guide, and either way it is us: not a leak, and not a sale of your address to anyone.
• How to get off the list. Every email we send carries a one-click unsubscribe link, which takes effect immediately. You can also reply "unsubscribe" to any message; replies are routed to [email protected], which is our own address, so you can email that directly and ask to be removed instead.
• Unsubscribing sticks. If an address has unsubscribed, typing it into the signup form again does not put it back on the list, and the form does not reveal whether an address was ever on it. That stops anyone from re-subscribing you without your say. If you unsubscribed and want back in, email [email protected] from that address and we will restore it by hand.

How long we keep it

We keep your subscriber record until you ask us to delete it. When you unsubscribe, we keep the row and mark it unsubscribed rather than deleting it; that mark is what guarantees a stale copy of the list can never mail you again by accident. When you ask for deletion, we remove the row entirely: email [email protected] and it is done. Signup notification emails stay in our inbox until a deletion request covers them, and Resend retains delivery logs under its own retention schedule.

Your rights: access, correction, deletion

Ask us what we hold about you and we will tell you (realistically: one email address, one source page, the terms version, and a few dates). Ask us to correct it or delete it and we will. Email [email protected] from the address you subscribed with; that is how we verify the request is yours, and if you no longer control that address, tell us and we will figure out a reasonable alternative. We answer within 45 days, we honor these requests for everyone who asks, whatever state or country you live in, we will not charge you, and exercising them changes nothing about how the site works for you.

Where we stand under the Colorado Privacy Act. The Act applies to businesses above defined thresholds: broadly, those controlling or processing the personal data of at least 100,000 Colorado consumers in a year, or at least 25,000 while deriving revenue from selling personal data. A site holding a list of voluntarily-typed email addresses, and selling none of it, is nowhere near either threshold, so the Act does not currently impose obligations on us. We honor access, correction and deletion requests anyway. If we ever decline a request, we will say so and say why, and you can appeal by replying: a second look, answered within 45 days. If you are still unsatisfied, you can contact the Colorado Attorney General.

Children

This site is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has submitted an address, email [email protected] and we will delete it.

Affiliate links (Amazon Associates)

Some pages (season, regulation and planning pages) have a short gear list with links to Amazon searches for a category of gear. Those are affiliate links: they carry our Amazon Associates tag, and as an Amazon Associate we earn a commission from qualifying purchases made after you click one, at no extra cost to you. Each link is labelled "on Amazon", and the disclosure sits above the links on every page that has them.

What that means for your data: nothing on our pages sends anything to Amazon. If you click an affiliate link, you leave this site and Amazon receives the click, including the tag that credits us. Amazon, as a third party, may then place or recognize cookies on your browser and collect information directly from you, under the Amazon Privacy Notice, not this policy. Amazon reports commissions to us in aggregate (items and amounts); it does not give us your name, your address, or anything that identifies you, and we do not try to match purchases to subscribers.

Cookies, analytics, and tracking

This site itself sets no cookies, runs no analytics or advertising scripts, and does not track your browsing. The only cookies connected to us are the Amazon ones described above, set by Amazon on its own site after you click through. Pages are static files, and the site's security policy (the Content-Security-Policy header we ship with every page) permits no third-party scripts at all, so an analytics script could not load here even by accident. As with any website, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) may process basic server request logs for security and reliability; we don't use those for tracking or marketing.

Three small counters run on our own server, and none of them identifies you:

• Outfitter link clicks. When you click an outfitter's website link, your browser tells our server which outfitter and which page of ours you were on, and we store those two things with the time. No IP address, no cookie, no browser details. It tells us which pages are useful to readers looking for a guide.
• Amazon gear link clicks. When you click one of our Amazon gear links, your browser tells our server which page of ours you were on, which of that page's gear boxes, and which link, and we store those three things with the time. No IP address, no cookie, no browser details, no user or session ID, and nothing about what you do on Amazon. Individual click records are deleted once they are about 90 days old; we keep only daily totals. It tells us which gear suggestions are useful. Nothing extra is sent to Amazon.
• Signup abuse limit. To stop the signup form being used to flood inboxes, the server counts signup attempts per hour using a one-way hash of your IP address combined with the hour. The IP itself is never stored, the hash is not linked to your email, and it is deleted about an hour later.

The postal address on our email

United States law governing commercial email (CAN-SPAM) requires every message to carry a working unsubscribe mechanism and a valid physical postal address for the sender. Both are in the footer of every email we send: the one-click unsubscribe link, and our postal address, The Colorado Hunting Guide, PO Box 203, Larkspur, CO 80118. Write to us there if you prefer paper; email is faster.

Links to other sites

We link out to CPW, the state's license lookup, outfitters' own websites, and (through the gear lists) Amazon. Once you follow a link, that site's privacy practices apply, not ours.

Changes

If we ever change what we collect or how we use it, we'll update this page in the same release as the change and update the date at the top. What changed on 17 October 2026: we added the anonymous Amazon gear link click count described above (page, gear box, link and time; no IP, cookie or browser details; individual records deleted after about 90 days). What changed on 10 October 2026: the same Amazon affiliate gear links now also appear on the gear checklist, blaze orange and deer season pages, and the welcome email links the printable season calendar; no data practice changed. What changed on 9 October 2026: the email went from a draw-deadline reminder plus season-change notes to one email a month, which may include occasional offers from Colorado outfitters and gear makers that we send ourselves (your address is still never sold or shared); the anonymous outfitter-click count and the hashed-IP signup limit were added; the Amazon affiliate links (live since 4 September 2026) are now disclosed here, with what Amazon can see when you click one; the "no tracking" statements now say precisely what they cover; we record the version of the terms you agreed to at signup; and signing up again no longer undoes an unsubscribe. What changed on 18 August 2026: retention, the rights process, the Colorado Privacy Act paragraph, the children statement, the plain-words disclosure of the signup source page, and the postal address note were all added; no data practice changed.
