GMU 851 lies in Costilla & Las Animas counties. CPW's boundary description: bounded on N by West and North forks of Purgatoire River and Colo. 12; on E by I-25; on S by NM; on W by Sangre de Cristo divide.

What is different about GMU 851
2026 brochure, OTC maps pp. 38–40 The unlimited 2nd and 3rd season bull licenses (E-M-000-U2-R and E-M-000-U3-R) are valid in GMU 851 in 2026, as they were on the 2025 maps. 2025 brochure, OTC maps pp. 38–41 Residents can also buy over-the-counter archery here (E-F-000-U1-A, E-E-000-U1-A); nonresidents cannot buy OTC archery elk west of I-25 and apply for a limited code.
GMU 851 has 30 limited elk codes for 2026 (3 archery, 3 muzzleloader and 24 rifle), 17 of them valid in this GMU alone. Resident adult cutoffs, highest first: E-E-851-W1-R at 30 preference points, E-E-851-W2-R at 29 preference points, E-M-851-O4-R at 20 preference points, E-M-851-O3-R at 19 preference points and E-M-851-O1-R at 17 preference points.
